And finally, organizing and storing the documents securely, while making sure your chosen representatives know where to find them. We’ve touched on all the steps, but let’s focus on ‘H. Organize and Store Your Documents’. It sounds so simple, doesn’t it? Yet, it’s amazing how often this crucial step is overlooked. People spend considerable time and effort creating a beautiful, comprehensive estate plan, then they stick it in a shoebox or bury it under a pile of paperwork! It defeats the entire purpose if those documents can’t be found when they’re needed most.

Think of it this way: your estate plan is a roadmap for your loved ones. If the map is missing or illegible, they’re left to navigate a difficult journey without guidance. We advise clients to keep the originals in a secure, yet accessible location – a fireproof safe, a bank safety deposit box, or our firm’s secure storage facility. We also recommend providing copies to your executor, trustee, and healthcare agent, ensuring they have access to the information they need. A checklist or summary of the plan, along with a list of key contacts and asset locations, is also incredibly helpful.

It’s not just about physical storage, either. We also encourage clients to digitize their documents and store them securely in the cloud, using encrypted platforms. This provides an extra layer of protection and ensures that the documents are accessible even in the event of a disaster. We emphasize the importance of regular maintenance, too – reviewing the documents annually to ensure they’re up-to-date and organized. About Estate Planning Law – Ted Cook

Ted enjoys working with clients to create a custom estate plan to protect their assets and to make sure their wishes are reflected in their estate plan. He treats each client as an individual and takes pride in the level of service he provides.

Ted graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy and was commissioned an Ensign in the U.S. Navy. In the Navy, he was a Surface Warfare Officer and served on three ships on the West Coast. While in the Navy, Ted attended the University of San Diego School of Law where he received his Juris Doctrate degree in 1989. After law school, Ted continued his active duty service in the Navy as a Judge Advocate General Corps officer. After retiring from the Navy in 2011, Ted became a partner with Tom Henry in the law firm of Henry & Cook, LLP focusing on estate planning. Upon the passing of Tom Henry in 2022, Ted started his own firm and continues to help his clients create estate plans that are individually tailored to meet their needs.
